Key Lab Description: English

The Key Lab at the University of Bayreuth will be part of Bayreuth Institute of Macromolecular Research (BIMF) and it will be coordinated by Professor Hans-Werner Schmidt (Macromolecular Chemistry I) and Professor Mukundan Thelakkat (Applied Functional Polymers). The research activities are carried out in an interdisciplinary manner between chemists and physicists. Within the framework of this project, a new Juniorprofessor will be hired to work on different aspects of solar energy research. For the research activities, the existing basic facilities of the “Laboratory for Solar Energy Research” and “Laboratory for Microscale Polymer Processing” will be updated and made available for the Key Lab.

The Expertise of Bayreuth Key Lab lies in the design and synthesis of low molecular and polymeric materials suitable for solar energy conversion and photoelectrochemical water splitting. Some of the objectives within this project are synthesis of novel, tailor-made materials, innovative design of efficient light harvesting systems, basic understanding of physical processes involving energy and electron transfer and development of devices based on “bottom-up” and “top-down” approaches. One of the focuses will be on hybrid systems and nanostructured polymer solar cells. The „Solar Technologies go Hybrid“ offers an efficient and unique plattform to cooperate with the different key labs in order to solve some of the burning scientific questions in this field using innovative concepts.
